Focus On The Feeling

via and introduced to me by Danielle of Envision Pretty

I got punched in the gut not once, but twice, by some striking words of wisdom.

First, I read a quote by Jane Buckingham, CEO of the consumer research company Trendera that really stuck with me. She said:

"So many young women treat life as a constant status update. They're thinking about how their lives look instead of how their lives feel."

Then, I saw the above manifesto poster from Striking Truths that pretty much relayed the same message.

"Boom," and might I add "boom." Right in the gut.

So many times I will be out at a wonderful dinner or party and HAVE to share it with the world on Facebook or Instagram. What I really should be doing is focusing on the present moment and enjoying the company surrounding me.

What do you guys think? Does technology make you feel sad sometimes. Looking at the fabulous lives of people I don't even know gives me this stupid envious feeling. But then, I'm guilt of wanting to share my photos too. Hmm... discussion please.

Also, if you like the above manifesto, you can receive a daily or weekly email delivering like messages for free from Striking Truths! You can also buy posters of the manifestos too. Very cool.

I just signed up cause I like a little kick in the pants every so often to remind me what's important.

OK, back to the discussion... thoughts?

  1. Great words. It's really hard to feel what's really your life is. You show to others like you have perfect one , but the truth is you are , sometimes, the most broken one!

    1. Exactly Sheree! Londa had a great point below about living in the moment and post photos to social media sites after the moment has passed- best of both worlds! Off to vote for you again, dear!

  6. This is a very thought-provoking quote - thank you so much for sharing it here, Holly. I, too, have been recently thinking about how to live more mindfully - being present HERE and NOW. I truly believe that with the development of social media and its ubiquitous presence we are constantly comparing our lives with everyone else, trying to 'top it off' with yet another witty, exciting status update or picture. I sometimes think that it was so much easier without Facebook, Twitter and Instagram! But then again - I like these sites and now can't see myself not using them.... It's a vicious circle, isn't it? xx

    1. Vicious circle, indeed! Londa had a great point below about living in the moment. Reflect and do the social media stuff after the moment passes- best of both worlds!

  7. Agree 100% with this. This is the danger of this kind of technology....we are not living in the moment because we are too busy tweeting and instagramming.....wise words indeed

  8. Great post for a discussion Holly. Social Media has enslaved an entire generation into anti-social behaviour.
Albert Einstein once said, “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.”
    That day is here. Scary.

    1. Wow- another fantastic quote that really makes you think. Einstein was ahead of his time in so many ways and here is another perfect example of that! Thanks for your comment!

  9. What a fantastic quote especially for the blogging world when you have to put up a facade that everthing is always great and pretty. Going to write this one down for the books:)

  10. Wonderful post! I think it's quite natural to feel a little jealous towards people sometimes, but it's the outcome that matters for me - you can either just feel the feeling or do something about the reason for it to improve your own life (and the way it feels) because what I found (for myself) is that really I only have a need to compare myself to or be jealous of somebody if my life feels unhappy. Once this part is sorted everything else just disappears. :)

  11. Love the words of wisdom. As far as instagram and such, I normally do that after I have enjoyed the moment; instead of during. I mean who really knows the party was over an hour ago, right? It is rare I post at the exact moment.

    1. I like this idea a ton, Londa. Take the photos, relive later. I have a friend who has a strict "don;t look at the photos until the next morning" rule when we go out. Same kind of thing!

  12. agreed - we need to live more in the moment instead of thinking about how our lives look on the outside. great quote!!

  13. This thought is definitely a double edged sword- because it's important to maintain your brand as a blogger, you "must" maintain a presence, but really- when does it all become too much?

  14. I've made a conscious effort lately that when I'm out with my friends/family, I put my phone away. No one needs to know every single detail of my life. And this way I'm much more present.

  15. I love this... and I signed up too! Now you know someone else is getting kicked in the gut right along with you :)

Your words really echo what I felt when I read the quote. Our virtual "worlds" can be made up of beautiful images and updates that can create an illusion that we or others live these beautiful lives day in and day out...every second. I think it can also borderline on obesseion when we become so consumed with what our life looks like from the outside, we forget to appreciate the life we really live right in front of us at that very moment. It is so hard to strike a balance- and hard to escape without a little envy of others portrayals of their lives. I think ultimately- in the end... you have to experience every moment to take it with you... the images, the status updates, the virtual friendships... all that fades away with time.

I always have to remind myself that I am blogging and sharing my life because I want to inspire others or share my happiness found in something- not to try and portray a life that isn't mine. Hard to do! :)

Thanks for sharing with your readers. I am considering buying the print and getting it framed! XO!

  16. I was told once that if you ever feel depressed about your life, to just look at your blog or social feeds. The reason? We only highlight the good. Everyone's life comes across as probably at least 10% better on their feeds. I try and remind myself of that, but on the other hand, I feel like social media does make us appreciate and find the beauty in little things. A la instagram. At least thats what I tell myself, because lets be real, I'm a social media junkie.

  17. Oh wow! Love love love that quote! This totally hits home. I'm always looking for that next shot I can post instead of relishing in the moment! I need to "feel" more for sure!
