So I have to reveal something to you. I have become somewhat of an Al Bundy lately a la the photo below. Every day, after I come home from work, I have been treating myself to a nice...cold... BEER! I know, I know, it's so ladylike, right?

I think we all go through libation phases, Am I right? I went from Boone's Farm (early college days, don't judge)... to raspberry vodka (ugh, still early college days)... to whisky... to wine... and now beer. If I may share some of my current favorites...

Wheat Beer
Wheat beer is.. you guessed it... beer that is brewed with a large proportion of wheat in addition to malted barley. The two common varieties are the Ducth witbier and the German weissbier and include flavorings such as orange and coriander. Wheat beers are usually top fermented and include varieties such as hefeweizen, witbier and the sour varieties such as lambic. Wheat beers are typically served with a lemon or orange peel in America, a practice that is frowned upon in Bavaria. Sorry Bavarians, but it tastes better that way #sorrynotsorry
Some shining stars include Allagash White, Hoegaarden, Ballast Point Wheat Beer, Lindemans Lambic Frambois, Wells and Young Banana Bread.

Sour Beer
Normally, beer makers are meticulous as keeping rogue yeasts and bacteria out of beer. Sour beer makers say "screw that noise" and deliberately introduce these items during the beer-making rocess, producing a tart or sour taste as the beer ferments. Yumm, right? Before you write off sour beer completely, please just give it a try. My best explanation of the taste is like drinking a milder tasting beer that has been graced with the fabulous taste of gummy belts or sour patch kids. The sour taste hits you right in the jaw... and because I am a glutton for punishment, the sour beer can hit me again and again... it's SO delicious!
Some shining stars include Russian Rover Sour, Los Abbey Cable Car, Supplication, La Folie.

Saison Beer
Mmm Saison's are so light and airy and fluffy and delicious. This lightly carbonated pale ale generally yields flavors that are fruity and spicy. Originally  Saisons were a group of refreshing summer ales made by farmers in Belgium.
Some shining stars include Fantome Saison, Allagash Interlude, Jolly Pumpkin.

  1. I am soooo into specialty brews lately. My husband says I have now become a "beer snob" I am no longer just a food snob or clothes snob..pretty much just a snob I guess..ha! I LOVE IPA' new obsession!!!!

  2. Loves me some Al Bundy! I hope you try some good ole Red Stripe Beer, Jamaica's finest. So excited about the giveaway! Woot Woot!

  3. Awesome!! I love Nicole and Debbi and will head over there as well!! I'm not a beer drinker :( I have tried and could never enjoy the taste!

  4. I've started to enjoy beer and have found myself carting home something new to try from the grocery store every now and then in recent weeks. Love the Allagash White- agree with you on that one. There are a few microbrews popping up around our neighborhood and we've spent Friday nights sampling which is fun. Amazing how different one can taste from the other. Like this topic!

  5. Ha ha ha... I too was once a Boones Farm lover... Now I agree with age its all about the beer. LOVE this post. :)

  6. oh my gosh - i used to drink boones too haha. it was like $4 or something. oops. now i'm sometimes in the mood for wine, but my fiance works in the beer industry so he usually gets us some tasty beers. wheat beers are my fave!

  7. I'm such a beer gal too! Oh who am i kidding, I love it all. ;)

  8. Love my beer too! I'm definitely a wheat girl.

  9. I wish I could like beer, but I don't. My husband drinks enough beer for both of us, though.

  10. It's like we are beer soulmates...Allagash is one of my all-time fave breweries! I have not tried their saison, but I die for a good saison.

Do you go to the beer-fest at the fair? We went last year. It is a really good time!

  11. haha, I love it! I am a total wine snob ( I have a glass almost every night- super good for my sugar intake, huh?)but every once in a while, it is SO refreshing to have a cold beer. I also find that not every dinner is good with wine... beer is a great way to wash it down.

I need to try some sour beer!

  12. I'm a beer girl myself (and vodka). Have you tried ginger beer? Super good.

  13. I seriously need to try more beers, I'm so used to the Natty Ice-esque drinks of my college years, so I'm in dire need to a step {or 5}, up from those! Also, I hope your sale went FABULOUSLY! Can't wait to hear all about it!

  14. I've always been a beer snob. IPAs that are heavy on the hops are my first choice.

  15. I'm just now catching up on your blog. I LOVE BEER. I would drink beer over anything, anytime. (Except for a dabble in tequila here and there. Who doesn't love a margarita?) Wheat beers are my personal favorites - Blue Moon, Allagash, and Hoegaarden are my go-to's. My husband works for a brewery so beer is a must in our house and never in short supply.
